You won't just stumble across the 1997 Mitsubishi Montero Evolution five minutes after booting up Forza Horizon 6. It's tucked behind progression first, which catches a lot of players out. Before the rumour appears, you need to earn the Orange Stamp in the Discover Japan system. No stamp, no map hint, no barn circle. Once that's sorted, you can start the hunt properly, and it's a nice change of pace from chasing races or saving up FH6 Credits for the next car you've got your eye on.

How to unlock the Montero Evolution rumour

The important bit is the Orange Stamp. That's the gate. Some players drive around Shimanoyama for ages thinking the barn is bugged, but the game simply won't show it until that stamp is in your collection. Keep working through Discover Japan activities until you get it, then check your map again. The barn rumour should pop up and point you toward the western side of the map. From there, you're not searching blind, but the final approach still needs a bit of attention.

Where to drive in Shimanoyama

The Montero Evolution is in the Shimanoyama region, over on the western part of Japan's map. Aim for the eastern side of Shimanoyama, where the paved road twists through a set of tight uphill hairpins. Drive all the way to the top of those turns. When the road stops curling so much and starts to flatten out, watch the east side of the road. There's a dirt track branching off there, and that's the turn you want. Take it downhill. It isn't a long trail, so if you're still bouncing along dirt after a minute or two, you've probably taken the wrong cut-off.

What makes the 1997 Montero Evolution useful

This isn't a glamorous hypercar, and it's not trying to be one. The Montero Evolution is better treated as a tough off-road tool with a bit of rally-raid character. It comes with all-wheel drive, 276 hp, and an Offroad rating of 8.0 in D class, which gives you a decent base for dirt routes and rougher events. Its 126.5 mph top speed and 7.51-second run to 60 mph won't scare anything on tarmac. Still, on broken ground, it feels much more at home. For a free Barn Find, that's a fair trade.

What to look for after you collect it

Once the barn is found, let the restoration timer do its thing and then add the Montero to your garage. If you're clearing hidden cars by region, stay around Shimanoyama for a bit and check whether other rumours have opened up, including the Lincoln 1962 Continental if you've met its own requirement. Barn Finds are easy to ignore while chasing events, but they're some of the more satisfying rewards on the map. They also save you from spending extra Forza Horizon 6 Credits for sale options on cars that can be earned with a short drive and a bit of patience.
